Our Yorkie’s health is of the utmost importance. We try to feed them the right food, get them to the vet when they should, and, of course, exercise them. But what is the optimal way to exercise our Yorkshire Terriers? After all, we want to get them the exercise that they need, but we also don’t want to overexercise them.
Generally, there are three ways we should exercise our Yorkies:
- Moderate Exercise
- Cardio Exercise
- Mental Exercise
Moderate Exercise
Moderate exercise includes walking your Yorkie at a steady but brisk pace. You should walk your Yorkie at least once per day, typically for 20 to 25 minutes. If your Yorkie is younger than 2 years, then cut it down to 15 to 20 minutes. If you can manage two 20-minute walks, that’s even better. Nevertheless, try to fit the walks around your schedule, and one walk is always better than none.
Cardio Exercise
As enjoyable as those walks will be, they’re not the only type of exercise your Yorkie should be doing. Shorter, more intense forms of cardio exercise can keep your Yorkshire Terrier in tip-top shape. This should be done at least once per week, but twice is best.
What do we mean by cardio exercise? Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Playing fetch
- Frisbee
- Hide & Seek
- Agility Training
- Tug-of-War
- Stair Springs
Mental Exercise
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Yorkies are a smart breed, so they need a way to challenge not only their bodies but their minds as well. Puzzle toys or kongs are great ways to put your Yorkie’s problem-solving skills to the test. Additionally, you can try changing up the route of your walks to ensure they experience different environments.
